Sarah Sands

Having stood at the edge of Brunswick since the 1850s, the Sarah Sands Hotel had fallen into disrepair prior to its redevelopment into a mixed use site containing a seven level building of 31 apartments, ground level retail, office and the restoration of the original hotel on the corner of Sydney and Brunswick Roads. A three level brick podium wraps the southwest corner of the site, activating the Sydney Rd streetscape through a glazed ground level facade and textured brick and generous balconies to the levels above. The upper levels are organised through a staggered grid of black aluminium fins that also play a role in reducing heat gain into the building.
